office2003 and limited account doesnt work quite right

Hello, I have a problem with XP pro sp2 and Office 2003 pro while using a limited account. Every time I start a part of office it configures itself and it also does this when you access menu items or tool bar items - very annoying. Also, the icon for the data files are generic ones, not the fancier office ones. also it seems the file associations arent right either, at least for .doc files - if I click a doc file I get wordpad, not word

this does not happen when running under the admin account. the program fires right up and all data files have the fancy icons.

system is up to date on patches and sp's for both xp and office.

Anybody have any ideas on this - i am sure it has to do with permissions but cant find anything - searched MS databases and didnt find anything.

Why does XP have to make using limited accounts so difficult?

This is a local machine, not trying to do anything over the network and I have tried re-installing office

I used to have trouble running Office on a limited account but I think I got rid of it by having the Office CD inserted the first time so it could complete the set up on the limited account.

Uninstall Office and reinstall it. However, when you reinstall it make sure you choose to the option to run from hard drive. Or when it asks what type of install, choose the "full" installation. This will ensure that all the files are already on the hard drive so you won't be prompted to insert the CD again.

thanks - did just do a complete install and it still does it - i did a complete install and left install files on drive - when I tried the above suggestion about trying it with the cd in the drive it didnt access the cd at al - just gives you the configuring your system message

1) switch the Limited account to a Computer Administrator account

2) run Office once

3) switch the account back to Limited, log off, log on again, and see if that resolved it.

nocturnal - it doesnt hang or ask for the CD - it configures it self - but it never remembers what it configured

Mech - thought I tried that once before and just tried again. when I was on as admin on that account it fires up without a problem. Once I changed it back to a limited account the same thing happens - it brings up a window saying it is installing and needs to configure it self - all the programs it apparently needs are on the hard drive as it doesnt ask for a cd

thanks for the assistance so far - any other ideas?

thank

That seems kind of strange what is happening, i have office 2002 and i have no issues with limited users, but have u tried unistalling office and reinstalling it in the limited user account using the Install/Run Program As Other User Option maybe this might fix the issue but i am not exactly sure how the outcome will be but it cant hurt to try.

have not tried installing that way. I have finally found some help on the MS site today while at work that sound like those are the ones I need, but cant try it till later.

ok - tried a variety of re-installs including a new account and still no luck - works fine as administrator, always opens the windows installer when using a limited account.

After looking at some stuff on MS site I looked at my application logs. One of them says there is a missing hkey root /.pip entry (at work so that syntax is off, but sure it was an hkey, root, and /.pip ). Anyone know where I should put that entry in regedit and the exact syntax for it?

There was one other log message but it dealt with missing handwriting module or app or some such message and since the system is a desktop, I am ignoring that message.
