I installed Oaffice XP as well as its speech recognition and now I am having problems. It is not that good except for a lagh now and then when I see what Word thinks that I am saying but sometines it is good. The problem I have that the speech recognition goes through the language bar and is ALWAYS on wich is very anoying, takes up memory and sometimes has some problems that slow my system to crawl until I kill the sapisvr.exe. Another problem is that it modifies my microphone settings. By default I have the microphone on my desk with it muted in volume controll. The valume is set to max and +20 DB microphone is desabled for beter clarity. The speech server always enables the microphone, enables +20 DB gain and lowers the volume to the lowest value to compensate for the high sensitivity volume. This is more of a problem when I play music and the microphone picks up the musics and plays it back causing hissing and static as well as that high pich loud sound dew to the constant loop between the speakers and the microphone.

What I want to do is set it so speech recognition is always disabled and is only enabled when I enable it and most importantly I don't want speech or anything else changing my default volume control. Please, somebod help me. I realy don't want to have to remove office XP and go back to 2000 just because of this.

Thanks

When you are not using the Microphone, click the Microphone button in the language bar (when you have it displayed as a bar at the top of the screen), so that the Start Speech dialogue is not shown. That shutsdown SAPI when it is not needed. Then simply hit the Microphone button again when you need it.
