Office XP not working on laptop

So I got a new Toshiba laptop. My school gave me a free copy of Office XP Pro. I installed it and everything was fine. When I go to open any of the Office programs, however, it promptly asks me for the authentication number. It says "setup has detected that the product key is missing or valid." Not sure why it says this as I type in the number when I install it and it accepts it. Anyway, I type in the key and it says that it has to restart the application. So I go to open the program again and AGAIN the problem occurs. An endless loop not allowing me to use any of the programs.

I returned the cd and got another one from my school. Same problem.

Can anyone help? I appreciate it.
