I just bought a copy of MS Office XP at a t yard sale and wondered if there is any way to tell if it has been already activated

You could try activating it and see if it works...even though you don't have to activate it for it to work.

It will work the first 50 times you open it then you will not be able to create anything new with it. MS FAQ

No - I haven't installed it yet, I was going to give it to friend but I don['t want her to install it and then find out it can't be activated. Are there any versions of Office XP (like WIN XP Pro) that don't require activation?

The corporate ones, but that would most likely mean you bought a pirated copy if you got one of those.

Try to activate it. If it doesn't work then it's been activated so you'll need to ring up to activate it.

If it does work then it may or may not have been activated in the past but it doesn't matter in either case.
