Question Office won't authenticate

So I have a work laptop that I use for testing and it is my backup unit. I think it is a Dell 7720. It is airgapped for the most part. I bought two just alike. The main unit, I autheticated office when it was new. The backup unit when connected to the net wants some sort of microsoft account log on. The main machine I am pretty sure it self autheticated when connected to the net. Even if I logged in with a MS user account it has no way of connecting that account to the office license. What happened to the authetication code system?
