Hey guys, not sure if this is the right forum, but i'm hoping you all can help me out. My daughter got a hold of the cover for my office 2003 and went ahead and tore off part of the product key, hehe. Any ideas on what I can doto replace it? the other half part she tore off is no where to be found.

TIA,
Joe

P.S. gotta love kids lol

Call MS. My brother stupidly threw away the outer wrapper of his XP Pro about a year ago (when the key was a sticker on it) and they helped him get a new key.

Yeah, i've heard a lot of good things about MS CS if you actually call them. From replacing lost CDs/keys to replacing hardware that's even out of warranty!

Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is a useful little tool to have around. If you already have a copy of the software (Either Windows 2000/XP or any version of Office up to present) already installed this utility will retrieve the product installation key for you. Of course it won't do you any good if you never had a chance to isntall the software before the key got eaten!

BTW, having raised several children and grandchildren, I could tell you where to look for the missing part of the key. :p

Good luck! I'm sure Microsoft has a way to deal with this and help you out.

BTW, I like the sig. Is Budman still around? I lurked here occasionally for a couple of years and used to really like Budman's humorous contributions to conversations.

Please be careful with that utility (MJB Keyfinder).

I'm sorry. I haven't used that utility (MJB Keyfinder) in a long time. I just went to the site and saw that version 1.5 beta 3 is supposed to work with Office XP and Office 2003. I know for a fact that an earlier beta did because I used it to help a friend get out of a pickle. I also communicated by e-mail with the author of the program about getting that earlier version to delineate between different Office products. (Friend was running Office Pro and Visio Pro, and we were being presented with two Office keys without any indication as to which key went with which product.)

I decided to test the beta 3 version. I downloaded it. When I unzipped the archive I received a notice from NOD32, my AV software, that there was a threat present. NOD32 labeled the threat as "Win32/PSWTool.RAS.A application". I downloaded version 1.41, the last official version of the utility, and it showed the same threat.

I have no idea whether or not this is a false positive. I suspect that it is, or that the utility makes use of a tool which is also used in some sort of malware out there. I do have aggressive heuristics turned on in NOD32 because this is a remote admin notebook I'm typing on.

I believe that the fellow who authored the utility is trustworthy. Of course it is always possible that the archives on the download servers could have been compromised without his knowledge, but I think not. I'll check with the NOD32 forum to see if anyone has reported this behavior with Keyfinder and, if so, whether or not it has been confirmed to conain malware.

This may be much ado about nothing. I have also seen this utility recommended more than once by others (here and at Ars Technica, I believe). If it has a problem I would think we would have heard by now.

I'll get back here if/when I get any further information about this. I'm sorry if this causes you any inconvenience.

I'm back. I went to the NOD32 forum over at Wilders and found a thread here:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=123609&highlight=keyfinder

concerning MJB Keyfinder. Appears that this is, indeed, a false positive. I tried turning off the "flag potentially dangerous applications" setting, and Keyfinder is ignored. If you read the thread above you'll see that a couple of people surmise that this utility is seen as a potentially dangerous application because of the fact that it could be used for nefarious purposes -- like getting a corporate key from a work machine.

As always, caution is good, but I'm pretty sure this utility is safe.

I hope that, if you choose to try it, the beta 3 version 1.5 will work for you.

Regards,
Ross

thanks ross, I only used it twice, on my wife's laptop. and she's running xp home. I haven't touched any of my pro machines. I'll keep lookin but I may eventually have to breakdown and call MS which I'm not too fond of.

Btw, good read. I think I like that forum.

Thank again,

Joe

Good luck!

(BTW, you did try the most recent beta, yes? It worked for seeing the Student and Teacher Edition of Office on my daughter's computer. Eh, but it is a beta after all.)
