Are office pools illegal (ie. the big superbowl pool that everyone's office has)? I wonder if a portion of the proceeds go to charity if that "legalizes" it. I remember my highschool had something like a lottery to pay for Prom but have always wondered the legal ramifications of it

Probably depends on the state. They are technically illegal here in Utah, as are all forms of gambling including lotteries.

So could we have an Anandtech raffle, with tickets being $10 and half of the proceeds go to charity? The other half could go to some lucky SOB who was randomly drawn from the 10,000 entries.

As long as each account would throw in $10 bucks, I see no problem with it.

Not everyone has to do it. If someone set up a paypal account and said 'Paypal 10 bucks to this account and include your ATOT name' then one of the moderators or Anand himself could pick from the entries. The winner could take half of the total money with the other half going to the charity. Not that difficult of a concept if you ask me.
