On page two of their Weekly Specials. The ad lists four SKU number. #2067-8401 is a Pacific Digital 8x burner. If your local store has any with serial numbers that are all digits, starting with 4, they are Lite-On 811S or 851S. If the serial number contains letters and starts with 4, it is probably an NEC. If it starts with the letter, P, it is a BTC.

Somewhere in cyberspace, there is a printable IN STORE Staples $15 off $75 coupon. You're on your own to find it, but that brings the final price down to $55 plus the tax on $105.

It's a 4x Pacific Digital DVD+-RW burner according to Officemax's website. Strange.

Thanks for posting this Harvey! please update with the OTD pricing.

remember peeps that ymmv with OM accepting a competitor's coupon, so this is pretty much the std OM offer on these otherwise. I was hoping they'd be dropping the price a bit lower about this time frame.

No brand listed in the ad for Texas, but it does appear to be for a +-8X burner ($149.99 - $30 instant - $50 mail in = $69.99) Check it out...

Seems like I've heard this before, but is there a way to determine the serial number / drive manufacturer from the outside of the box?

Many newspapers have a $10 off $30 OfficeMax coupon in the Valassis color coupon insert today 4/18.

Dallas, some NY (not NY Times), Atlanta, Bay area, Chicago Tribune, not in Cleveland, not in Tallahassee. Valid 4/18-5/31. Don't know about other locations.

Just like Harvey said in his post, on one of the boxes side it has the serial number on which you can distinguish what kind of drive it is. check out his post for what the Lite-on serial starts with and what the NEC ones do.

Officemax no long accepts coupons form competitors.

The 3 DVD burners on sale at Officemax for 69.99 after a $50 MIR is the Pacific Digital, Mad Dog Domination and the Micro Advantage.
The Mad Dog Domination was on sale a few weeks ago at Microcenter and people were getting a rebadged NEC 2500A inside the box.
You can find more info on these drive by search for one of by old threads

BTY: The current low price on Pricewatch.com is $82.40 for a OEM 8x/8x NEC 2500A drive shipped, NO! taxes, NO! rebate.

Which is better, the Lite-on, NEC or PC?

I just got a $10 off any in-store $30 purchase coupon in the mail that is valid through 5/29.

Where are the $50 burner offers when I need one.

I've noticed mags that come with CD-Rs now come wtih DVD's instead.

I know DVD's hold more but other than that, I've been trying to justify buying one.

I don't need another type of media taking up space.

Does anyone have some pros & cons I should consider?

Not to mention, it seems there's a DVD burner sale every week.
Could it be that they are being dumped due to new formats coming out this year?

Thanks

Not to mention, it seems there's a DVD burner sale every week.

Could be, especially since the Dual Layer capable burners can be had at reasonable prices (ie. BenQ 822 for around $100 with free Dual Layer upgrade). OfficeMax must have a million, make that a billion or these burners to sell off. OM has had $70 after rebate prices for weeks, er, months.

However, media prices for the Dual Layer will continue to be a little expensive for a while. Also, I have concerns on the archive time - some of the Single Layer burners and media has lost readability in short time (year or two). I figure the Dual Layer burn process is going to be much harder to get quality writes/reads.

All that said, Single Layer should be useful format for some time - and at $70, the cost of DVDs is going to drive your overall ownership cost. If you want to do Dual Layer, the "yatch" rule may well apply - if you have to ask how much it costs, it costs too much for you. :)

I went and purchased this drive from OM. It would read CDs, burn CDs, play DVD movies, but the darn thing would not burn a DVD. I tried several different brands of media including Ritek, TDK, and Maxell. Not one toaster but nothing ever burned either. With Nero it would crash even during simulated burn. It came with EZ CD/DVD creator and it wouldn't burn with it either. I even downloaded and flashed the new firmware and still nothing. After 2 evenings of farting with it, I took it back. I hope you guys/gals have better luck with it.
