Office Depot: Linksys 802.11b PCI Adapter - $12.99

I was at my local Office Depot yesterday and they had the Linksys 802.11b PCI Adapter for $12.99
It said Clearence, regular price $49.99. I thought this was a good deal, don't know if it's just local or all Office Depots.

On a side note a couple days ago I recieved another Office Depot coupon in the mail for $10 off a purchase of $50 or more.

no PCMIA card included, note this is just the PCI adapter that lets you plug your PCMIA card into, to use with a desktop.

hehe, yea I almost peepeed my pants when I saw 802.11b and $12.99, but then I saw it was only the PCI adapter. Still a good deal though!

Very good deal for the PCI to PCMCIA bridge. Considering the best price I had seen previously was about $40.

Anybody know if this works with any PCMCIA card, or if its only with 802.11b devices?

I was thinking about buying a firewire or USB 2.0 card for my laptop (PCMCIA), and if I could plug it into this I wouldn't have to buy one for the desktop as well.

This will only work with linksys 802.11b cards. will not work with any other kind of PCMCIA card.

It MAY work with other 802.11b cards that have the same chipset as the linksys 802.11b card.

I believe the SMD, DLINK, and Linksys cards all have the same chipsets.

Unsure if this card will work with other mfg's cards. I have an SMC 802.11b pcmcia card + pci adapter combo (they were purchased together) and there is a sticker on the combo saying something to the effect of "do not remove card from adapter".

I called SMC to see what was up -- they told me that the model of PCMCIA card that was included in the combo was slightly different from their other PCMCIA card, and that the power input was different, and so it may not work as a standalone pcmcia card. They doubted the PCI adapter could be used with other PCMCIA cards, and suggested that attempting this would result in burning out the PCMCIA card, the PCI adapter, or even the motherboard.

So personally I would only use this PCI card with Linksys cards. But hey what do I know, YMMV... =)

I have the netgear 802.11b pci and pcmcia combo and the sticker on the pci adapter says "Do not remove card from adapter while computer is powered on".

I have used the pcmcia card in laptops without any problems at all. My the pcmcia card and pci adapter were sold seperately, so this may be why I have a different warning.

This has been on clearance for a month or more at Office Depot, so good luck finding them. But hey, you never know.
