Old XPpro w/SP3 and all updates installed. Wife can open an existing document or create a new one. She can make this bold, use italics, and even employ subscripts, etc., but if she clicks on the Font drop down menu or uses the keyboard equivalent the application hangs, and then crashes.

During one of these reproducible incidents Microsoft Office Diagnostics came up, was allowed to run to completion, identified and fix one issue it found, but still the problem persists. Unfortunately, we do not have another XPpro+Ofice 2007 setup in the home to test this on another computer.

We do have Office 2007 installed on a Vista laptop and a W7 desktop, but not another XPpro PC. This occurs in Word and Excel. Also, the wife noticed that if she changes the orientation of selected cells in Excel it also hangs and then crashes.

No email, general surfing or any other kind of activity is done on this PC. Its strictly work web-based email and Office 2007 (Word/Excel). Not sure what is going on. Ideas?

Never mind, I found the problem. We have a Samsung wireless laser printer and whenever we have a power outage the registered IP address changes (running DHCP through the house). While some computers (e.g. iMac, W7, etc.) have no problem looking, finding, and re-registering the printer's new IP address, the XP computers are not so savvy.

I tested this by changing the default printing device to something else and not only did Word open a lot faster, but we could change the fonts as well.
