From the small guide that comes with MS Office 2003:

"To help reduce software piracy, the Office 2003 Editions use the product activation system, which allows your copy of the Office 2003 Edition to be installed on only one computer"

I'm not sure on this because I have volume licenses, but check the EULA really well.... I remember older versions of Office would allow you to install it on two machines, i.e. a work and home comptuer, or a work computer and a laptop.

If that was the case, it would probably activate fine on two machines, or if you called they'd let you do it. Worth looking in to.

yeah it needs activation... pure suckage. MS doesnt get it...
Microsoft does "get it". Activation is only inconvenient for people who choose to use their software illegally. <sarcasm>The couple mouse clicks and 30 seconds are such a hardship...</sarcasm>. And incidentally, more and more software companies are beginning to use activation. Like Adobe and Symantec. Seems they also feel Microsoft "gets it". Oh, and one other thing. Microsoft is hardly the first company to use product activation. It is simply the first giant company to do so.

it needs activation, but you can install it on two machines before you'll need to call it in. I remember reading this somewhere(i think) and I installed it on a laptop and desktop fine..

"the underlying principles of Microsoft's software licenses have not changed. Microsoft's End User License Agreements (EULAs) have always stipulated the number of PCs that software can be installed on. Product Activation does not change that. Office XP or Office 2003 may be installed on one PC. The primary user of Office may also install one copy on a laptop computer for their exclusive use."
