Office 2000 causes problem with audio

Alright, let me provide some background. Normally, I have Windows' volume slider set to half way and use the speaker controls to adjust the volume. Now that I've installed Office 2000, whenever I boot into Windows, the volume is reset to the maximum even though the slider is still at the half-way point. This is very annoying since the speakers are extremely loud when it plays the startup sound, but as soon as I adjust the sound, it goes back to the normal volume.

I have confirmed this to be related with Office 2000 since I didn't get this problem with Office XP. However, Office XP causes a whole set of other problems on my system, which is why I am using Office 2000. I've also done a motherboard swap and that didn't change the problem. And finally, this problem also happens using the onboard sound on my motherboard, so it's not that.

Below is my hardware and software setup:

Windows XP Professional (with all critical updates installed)
SoundBlaster Audigy Gamer (latest drivers installed)
Office 2000 (all patches and updates installed)

Anybody else experience this problem, and if so, have you found a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated here.

This is a software issue and not General Hardware related.
