Lemieux preparing for World Cup

Canadian Press
8/3/2004

PITTSBURGH (CP) - Mario Lemieux is on a mission as he prepares for the World Cup of Hockey followed by a return to the Penguins lineup, says his personal trainer.

Lemieux looked trim and fit during the NHL team's alumni golf tournament for charity Monday.

``It's a testament to all the work he's doing,'' Jay Caufield, the personal on-ice trainer who is to rejoin Lemieux for skating sessions early next week, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Caufield, a former Penguins player, estimated that Lemieux weighs less than 230 pounds and, even though the Penguins owner-captain broke that weight barrier before, he probably wasn't this fit.

``I think he's on a mission,'' said Caufield. ``He's got an opportunity with Canada and the World Cup, but I also think with the team.

``I think he liked how the team ended up last year. And, with the people they've added, there's got to be some more excitement for him.''

Lemieux, who had hip surgery last January, skated alone with Caufield a couple of times over the last 10 days. He skated without pain or problem, Caufield said, adding that he's seen a motivated Lemieux since his aborted comeback in December against Toronto.

``He knows the things he needs to do for himself,'' said Caufield. ``He's in great shape.''

Forsberg cleared to play for Sweden

Associated Press
7/31/2004

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - Former NHL most valuable player Peter Forsberg has been cleared by doctors to play for Sweden in the World Cup of Hockey beginning late next month in Europe and North America.

"I've seen my doctors in the last few days in Montreal and Denver, and they said I could start working out at 100 per cent," the 31-year-old Colorado Avalanche forward told Swedish tabloid Expressen's Web site Saturday.

Forsberg, the league's MVP last year, underwent stomach-muscle surgery eight weeks ago in Montreal.

"Sometimes I'm still a little bit stiff, but my doctors say rehab will take up to 10 weeks, so I have two weeks before I'll be 100 per cent," Forsberg said.

"Naturally I'm happy. You're always a bit worried after an operation, but now I know I can take the next step. That's nice."

Forsberg will fly to Sweden on Tuesday and said he plans to work out for the first time late that afternoon with MoDo Hockey, the Swedish Elite League team he played for before heading to North America. He will travel to Stockholm on Aug. 19, when the Swedish World Cup team is scheduled to open training camp.

Forsberg last played for Sweden at the World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic earlier this year. Canada beat Sweden 5-3 on May 9 to win the tournament.

In the World Cup of Hockey, Sweden is in the European pool with the Czechs, Finland and Germany. Finland plays the Czechs in the opener Aug. 30 in Helsinki.

Canada is in a group with Russia, Slovakia and the United States, which won the inaugural World Cup in 1996. The Canadians open their tournament Aug. 31 against the U.S. at Bell Centre in Montreal.

Countdown has started! I bet i could guess which NHL team you cheer for. 😉

Well, in 27 days the gloves are off and the clash is on, may the best team win.
