i am nearly 30 years old and had no clue Geronimo was even a person, but I always said the term as a kid when throwing water balloons really far, jumping out of a tree, or when dropping stuff from a tall height. i would yell it like 'geerrrrrrrrooooooonnnnnnniimmoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo'

oh man i hope people don't start complaining abuot me saying that!

That's sad. Then you throw a couple "who the fuck cares" when you have no idea who has an issue or why? ffs I even posted a bit about it a few posts up from yours. D:

As for the OP, I do find it kinda "wrong" they'd use that name to ID OBL.
I'm not one for being all "PC" and such, but it was in poor taste. Not that anyone should be really concerned with such things during such an important and historic mission planning.

Best case is say "yeah, sorry about that" and everyone move on.
Is it kinda "wrong" for them to ID the mission or the operation as 'Geronimo'?
I think that is the issue here too, the misinterpretation. Upon investigating I've read 'Geronimo' was used as codename for the operation.

Geronimo was Saint Jerome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Jerome

The American Indian leader got his name during a battle with Mexican soldiers, as they were beign killed, the soldiers cried out the name of Siant Jerome (Geronimo).

So his nickname came from that of a Christian Saint.

Exactly. It was not even his name! Offended because they named the operation after a nickname accidentally given by white soldiers fighting Goyaałé, which is his real name, trying to kill him.

Effing stupid thing to be offended about.

I learned about this in grade school. But yeah who cares about history. (that's never gotten us into trouble before) :hmm:

Anyway I've also read that it was the name of the operation, not the target as well. Not unheard of for the media to jump the gun on stuff like this without all the (correct) info. Still, I can see why anyone outside of al qaeda and their supporters wouldn't want anything to do with OBL - historical references or otherwise. The media will probably make a bigger deal out it than they will though.

I think posters' outrage at the Indian's outrage is just a silly and even more petty than the original outrage, but, by all means, carry on. ;)

That's offensive. I like Neptune. I am going to sue.

Trident is definitely outraged, but that's just because he's Neptune's tool.

Someone needs to send the Onondaga Nation leaders back to kindergarten. They were obviously out sick the day that the class reviewed "sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never hurt me."

Would that be the class where they punished you for dressing like an Indian and smacked you for speaking your own language? Or the one where they prohibited you from practicing your culture?

Meh, it's just a political football like closing of National/State parks.

I guarantee if they named the "operation" Martin Luther King there would be a ton of butthurt people in this country. So I see the Native Americans as having a point, so next time just name the operation Charlie Sheen, because that's someone that needs shot in the head.
