why in the world is an off topic thread locked? I mean it just doesn't make sense to me, this goes right up there next to me hearing earlier today some guy say that a hardware question doesn't belong in off topic! if it is off topic you can never be off topic, only on topic (or somethign like that) what do you gusy think?

---

If anything, this thread belongs in Forum Issues.

"Off Topic" doesn't necessarily connote a free-for-all. There is still proper posting content and rules that apply to this forum.

I mean, if everyone with a hardware question posted here, what's the point of the general hardware forum? Same goes with forum issues, hot deals, etc. etc.

Off Topic, at least ATOT, means posting anything that simply doesn't belong in any other category; even so, there's still posts that don't belong here, esp. NEF posts because they don't serve any purpose other than to clutter the place.

so it is not apporpriate to ask a hardware question here? also is it not appropriate to ask why a thread gets locked? also could you post a link to the off topic rules? I missed them...

If a thread gets locked, it's usually for a good reason, such as:

Repost (usually allowed unless it's the 50th repost of the same thing in 2 days)
NEF post
"W00t" member status change post
Inappropriate content

Correct. The mods will lock this because it belongs in Forum Issues, for example.

Gopunk's thread was locked because it started turning into an unproductive flame war.

If I had any say in which posts get locked I'd say anything political or religious, not because I'm anti- anything, just because certain members keep starting the same arguments every time one of those comes up and it gets REALLY old.

Holy crap! Now I really admire the rules of this forum and how they are enforced, but if they don't post the rules to the forum how is someone like me who frequents tech supports and fs/ft gonna know that asking a question is inappropriate?

You will learn by getting your thread locked, and knowing not to do it again. Its not terrible to get a thread locked, as long as you use common sense then you should be fine. Most of the time when it gets bad is when the same people do the same thing over and over again, as long as you don't keep posting the same stuff, don't degrade a person(too much), don't say this is to nef, etc then you should be ok.

But in most cases, the threads that get locked, we all know they are going to get locked.
The longer you are here in ot the more you will learn what to post and not to post.

That was me, and the thread didn't belong there (you'll notice it appears to have been moved to Tech Support). <simmer>I have trouble believing someone who has a higher post count than I has trouble understanding that OT is a place to post messages that don't below anywhere else. I further have trouble understanding why you think it's ok for someone to CROSS POST in both Operating Systems and Off Topic the same damm message</simmer>

Correct, it is not appropriate.

I, again, further find it hard to believe you can just figure this out by reading the forums for a day before posting.
