off to london and Paris for vacation.....need help!

I'm taking my gf (or rather, she's taking me coz she has free tickets with her frequent flyer miles) to London and Paris in August this year.
I live in NY and I've never been to europe before.
I was wondering, where I should start with my itinerary.
First, i should determine how many days will we be in london and then paris.
the flights are from jfk-london-jfk , so i will have to come back to london from paris.

Then, I need to find a B&B or a small hotel in london, but which area, I'm completely clueless. I guess the same goes for Paris.
and then, I need to make a list of things to do in london.

any other ideas?

I didn't like London at all. but if you are going anyway, I would suggest taking the boat ride down the Thames to Greenwich, England to see the Observatory. That was pretty cool. You get to see a lot of the sites while on that.

Check out the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. (obviously)

For a good club...Ministry of Sound.

But i'm sure the members from England can offer better places.

Go here: www.londontown.com for great deals on TOP hotels, if you want to go somewhere special for a couple of nights. Hell, the prices can be so good you may stay in a 4/5 * hotel all the time.

I live in England, just outside London and use this site. You have it from a local!

The site will have links to all the hotel information and include the local attractions. Bear in mind that the Underground system is the best way to get around, so a hotel next to a Tube station is a big bonus and should be a priority.

Do not stay near either LHR or Gatwick airports, as neither are nowhere near the city and will need good 45min journey to get in, plus will be overpriced.

West london (Knightsbridge, South Kensington and Chelsea) are the nicest places, but also command top dollar. BUT the link above can get you into these locations for a pretty fair price.

Enjoy!

The cheapest i can get is 55pounds/night !!! at a small hotel..

maan, this is expensive......delmere hotel...

In Paris try to stay around La Madeleine.. It's right next to the Place de la Concord, and the Rue de Royal.. I have stayed at the Hotel New Roblian (sp?), and the Hotel Burgandy, both for around 100$ per night.. Nice places both and it's so close to everything.. I still have some maps and things, I can probably scan one ot two for you if you want???

Be SUPER careful with cheap hotels in London.. you can get screwed.. I got booked into the Hotel Marble Arch, and it was a pakistani guys HOUSE.. with a broken bed and all of there stuff stuffed in "my" room.. It smelled like they were cooking curry tabby cat or something.. I ran screaming....

The Dolphin is very nice, and if you really work them, you can get a deal.

As a tourist, I found Paris more interesting than London. Thus, if I were you, I would schedule at least as many days for Paris as you do for London.

(Sorry, I hope I haven't offended any London-ers.)

You can fly from London to paris cheap with BMI or Ryanair I believe.

Both cities are huge and it will be the middle of tourist season though. I liked London better but Paris is OK.

DOne!
i'm gonna be in london from aug 27 to aug 31 and in paris from aug 31 to sept 4
so, 5 days each!

now, where can i find hotel/motel/B&B deals and some deals for the tube and some shows and some electronics!

As it happens I'm taking my gf to Paris on Valentine's day with my frequent flyer miles. First time for her and 10+ for me so we are going to do the whole tourist thing.

First hotels are expensive in Paris and their quality is not generally what you are used to in the US mostly due to them being in old buildings esp. in central Paris. This makes the rooms small and they may be rather interestingly shaped. You can have a look at them here Paris hotels

Do not even think about getting a car. Public transport is excellent and cheap.

Also to eat well you have pay some serious money. Of course some there are some cheaper alternatives worth trying but maybe surprisingly finding a place to eat may be a little difficult and the portions are small. Drink wine.

Take good care of your wallet. Pickpockets are everywhere esp. in metro stations and tourist attractions.

For shopping imo the best place is La Defense. No tourist extra in prices there. Apart from the 4Temps shopping mall there are other interesting things to see there.

Since first time for my gf these are things we are going to see and I feel that are must when in Paris. They may feel cheesy but in the end you'll be happy that you have seen them:
- Eiffel tower
- Champs Elysee & Arc de Triomphe
- Sacre Coeur and Montmartre surroundings
- Versailles
- Seine cruise
- Quartier Latin
- Notre Dame (Ile de Cite & Ile St Louis)
- Louvre (not necessarily from the inside, it's simply too huge to even get a glimpse of it a few days and Mona Lisa is nothing special.)
- Luxembourg park
- Opera & surroundings

Also I recommend since you are going with your SO to just walk around and feel the atmosphere. There are a lot of small streets and parks that are a sure hit among the women and those of us comfortable with our inner female 😉

And last here you will info on all the sights etc.

Aston's Apartments is a really nice, small hotel in one of the most posh areas of London (Kensington). It is run by a family and a small staff, and the service is really personable. It is where I stayed when I was in London last and it is really convenient and nice. It was really expensive though (due to the area it is located in). It was a few years ago, but I think it was around 400 pounds a week.

yea, i went on one of those boat rides once, it was good 😀

just came back from London last sunday. we stayed at Park international hotel in south kensington, right next to the holiday inn forum. The hotel itself is just ok, it is supposingly a 3 star hotel, but more like a one star, the room is very small but has a private bath, we paid 66pounds+ tax a night for 3 of us, so we have no complaint. The location is prefect, only 3min walk to the Gloucester Road undergound/tube station, 15mins walk to Harrods.

good luck,
Rich

I have been to both London and Paris and I would say... GO TO ITALY INSTEAD. Seriously, I have been to Europe 4times and going to Italy was by far my favorite trip. Paris is okay your first time, but it gets annoying how they dislike Americans. As far as London goes, I didn't spend much time there and I was able to see everything I wanted too in a day.

Buy a digital camera and take tons of pics😀

Thanks for the link. I was in London for only 3 days in November, and can't wait to get back! I stayed at the Alhambra, just across from St. Pancras Station. Cheap, but very clean and friendly. 30 pounds, included full breakfast.

gordita, I don't have any suggestions, but I just wanted to wish you guys a lot of fun in London/Paris. I've never been to London but I've been to Paris many times when I was young ( I used to live in Switzerland) and it was really nice. I don't remember the places we visited or I would have made suggestions. As someone who also lives in NY, you'll find Europe totally different from here.

Anyways, I just wanted to wish you luck and I hope you have lots of fun.

I'm going to London in a couple of days for the first time. 🙂 Will be staying at Park Int'l Hotel as well. Planning to head to the British Museum and esp the Imperial War Museum!

Thought about taking a look at some computer parts, but figured they are probably more expensive than US/Canada.

My fiance and her friends did this same trip (out of NY) in Sept of last year. They hit London first and stayed at the Blakemore Hotel. Great experience with them.

The hotel in Paris she stayed at wasn't so good (she forgets the name of it)... so I won't bother with that. She recommends about 3 days in each city, but maybe a little more for Paris (she said she wants to go back and spend more time there) ...

Hope it works out for you.

In Paris, be sure to take one of the cruises along the Seine. I believe they also haev dinner cruises as well. Enjoy the trip!
