This might be completely ridiculous, but oh well:)

If you were real up on machine/assembly language, could you go out and write your own BIOS? Are there hardware parts in existence that would support this for an individual user? Working on machine language in school, and this was just something I was wondering about. Thanks ahead.

Much more doable to modify an existing bios, than to write a completely new one.
You would need an eprom programmer, which would cost maybe $150.
Try emailing "Jack" at www.badflash.com
For the IOpener, someone with the name "Wild Pencil" has modified the IOpener bios for added features.
Wild Pencil's Yahoo briefcase: http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/wild_pencil/lst?.dir=/IOpener+BIOS&.order=&.view=l&.src=bc&.done=http%3a//briefcase.yahoo.com/
He posts on the IOpener BBS occasionally: http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowBoard&Board=technical&Idle=&Sort=&Order=&Session=
