  1. Overview of the problem
Off Mode In 5 Sec" message and abrupt system restart only while playing the Planescape: Torment game.
  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
Whenever I attempt to play the game Planescape: Torment, the screen will flash to black after 5-10 minutes and the message "Off Mode in 5 Sec" appears, followed shortly after by a total system restart that I can't stop. Why is it happening, and how can I fix this issue? It's maddening.

I am running Windows XP w/SP2, and I have never had this sort of problem with any other game. Thank you for answering.

  3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
The problem has existed since exiting the beginning area of the game. After loading the new 'Hive' area, the crashes began happening at random, though usually at a rate of every 5-10 minutes of play.

  4. Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?
Consistent, repeatable, but semi-random. See above.

  5. I already tried these steps:
I couldn't find much information on this issue. I've reinstalled and tinkered with graphical settings, to no avail.

  6. My software:
    • Windows XP Professional Edition with SP2
    • AVG Antivirus Free
    • Windows Firewall

  7. My hardware
    • ASUS P4S333
    • Pentium 4 Willamette 1.8ghz (not overclocked)
    • Geforce 440 MX
    • 2 x 512mb (1gig) DDR memory
    • Stock PSU
    • Viewsonic A90f CRT monitor

  8. Other information that might be relevant
I've never experienced this same problem with any other game. Besides Planescape: Torment, the 'Off Mode in 5 Sec' message has never showed up for me. It is worth noting that I have a new Viewsonic A90f CRT monitor, but I've already played numerous games with it and had no issues.

It might be shutting down due to overheating caused by game play.

Check your temps, see if they're above limits.

OPen whatevver temp monitor application you use, leave it open then play your game awhile. Then ALT + TAB keys to toggle out of the game and over to the temp monitor program. Read temps. Too hot??? Maybe. Anyway, that's one likely culprit for the sort of problem you describe.

Usually when you get a reboot on games or other demanding applications its power supply or heat related.

Is there anything in the event logs showing the reason for reboot?

scott: 76C, around 168 fahrenheit right after my system crashed from Torment. The temperatures skyrocketed from a stable 40C to that only minutes after playing it. However, I have also tested temperature on multiple other games, and in none of them do I crash or suffer a restart. Everything continues running fine, except when playing Torment -or- Baldur's Gate.

RadiclDreamer: I'm unsure how to read the event logs. There were warning messages and errors, but I don't know if that's related to the crash/reboot.

Atheus: Baldur's Gate is another one that gives the same "Off Mode in 5 Sec" message and reboots the computer.

So basically, my system is running very hot, but only those two games seem to bring on the restart. Any ideas? Still think it's caused by the heat?
