(CNN) -- An off-duty police detective in Baltimore, Maryland, died after being struck in the head with a piece of concrete during a parking space dispute, authorities said Sunday.

Brian Stevenson, an 18-year police veteran, was out celebrating his 38th birthday with a friend late Saturday night when an argument ensued over a parking spot outside a restaurant, police said.

Multiple people approached Stevenson, and "one of the individuals pulled a piece of concrete from the ground and struck him in the head," Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

The attack occurred about 10 p.m. Stevenson was rushed to Johns Hopkins hospital, where he died.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld described Stevenson as a "fantastic" detective.

"To lose his life in this manner is senseless," Bealefeld said at a press conference early Sunday morning.

Guglielmi said multiple people found at a nearby nightclub were in custody and were being questioned.

It was unclear whether the attacker knew Stevenson was a police officer.
Guglielmi said witnesses are cooperating. Bealefeld said police have a suspect in custody, but the person had not yet been charged.

"We're confident the culprit in this case will be charged before the day is done," Bealefeld said.

He said Stevenson's death affects all of Baltimore.

"It's an incredible tragedy to family, to all of us, to the entire city."

We need to stop coddling criminals. As soon as the trial is over, he should be taken straight to the parking lot and hung.

Even worse is the people who think they own the street in front of their house, and try to tell you that you aren't allowed to park there.

I agree, but then you'll have people like the one off-duty cop who pulled out his off-duty weapon to shoot someone over a girl at bar close and not get in trouble for it anyway lol.
 
This is pretty horrible, but if I was in Baltimore I wouldn't fighting anyone for a parking spot. Sometimes it's just not worth it.
 
Atleast they didn't break into his house, shoot his dog, tazer him twice, then shoot him ... and plant drugs on his body :|

We all know they sprinkle cocaine on themselves because crackheads have an intrinsic fear of leaving behind mysteries. Joking asside any sort of physical fighting over a parking space is retarded, and killing someone over it is a tragedy.
 
why add the off-duty cop thing? i have never got that. how about a man was killed...

everybody is off duty at some point but stories like this dont start with "0ff duty florist killed over..." or off duty pipe fitter was killed..."
 
Thats terrible. Theres been a few fights over parking spaces in the close lot where I work. I dont get these people who get all worked up over a parking space, ridiculous.
 
The best part about Baltimore is leaving, which is what I intend to do as soon as possible with a new job...

It fucking SUCKS here.
