Hi, i am almost ready to put together my new rig. I would like a 1st and 2nd choice of your suggestions of these power supplies which will be the best and enough power to push the components? I did not list one but would a 450 or 500 also do the job? Thanks!

The rig will be a gaming box nothing too fancy. Need to know specs: Antec 900 case, Intel Q9650, Nvidia GTS 275, 1 sata 500 gig HD, 8 gigs of ddr2 Gskill RAM, 1 - Optical drive.

BFG - 550-Watt ATX Modular Power Supply $74.99 =

Personally, I'd ditch Best Buy and concentrate on other places to purchase from, like Newegg or ProVantage.

Second, the Corsair would be my choice of those listed, but I'd also consider the Antec TPN-650 at Newegg for $99.....helluva better ps than anything else up there except the Corsair, and even then, I'd be real tempted to buy the Antec....better ripple/noise suppression than the TX's of Corsair and the Antec is a Seasonic build.

The Earthwatts, the BFG and Rocketfish are all non-starters in this discussion. All are much worse in electrical output (worse ripple/noise generation and worse voltage stability), and just aren't worth the $$ involved considering you can purchase better units for the same $$, like linked below.

Hi Meghan, thanks for the advice. Hmm, well I have a gift card to use from BB and that's why I was going to get the PS from them. I hate to spend the $ out of pocket when I have the gift card to use. I never knew Corsair for their PS's and that would have been lower on my list but if you say it's the best of those listed I think I may go with it.

Whacha think?

Earthwatts is good but if you have the budget then go modular and probably will end up saving alot of time/money on managing cables in your case.

You would be ok with a 500W psu, even 450W. I'm saying this based on actual measured peak system power consumption from numerous gtx 275 reviews. From the ones I checked nothing even hit 400W, and those were with systems more power hungry than yours, typically overclocked i7 processors used in these reviews.

Theres a 450W Corsair for $75 at BB. Get that or get the 550W BFG, which is a good power supply and fine for your needs.

Thanks for all the advice. Now I am torn between the BFG that Morph recommended or the Corsair. The Corsair is getting more recommendations overall but it is not modular like the BFG which I like.

So now which way to go? lol

Hard choices, I know.

But I'm a bit more partial towards CWT (Corsair's OEM in this case) as an OEM vs. Enhance (BFG's OEM in this case). Nothing bad about Enhance at all...owned a couple of their own branded units a couple of years ago and had no problems, but I did notice they ran a little louder and hotter than the Corsairs that replaced them.

But you really cannot go wrong with either. Just concentrate on those and forget the others....please! :)

Thanks Meghan. On lunch I went down and checked the models out again. I think i will go w\ the Corsair even though it is not modular. I do have one other idea below but 1st. Just curious... I noticed a 450 watt modular Thermaltake at BB that I did not see before, it also had a 5 year warranty. How does it compare to the Corsair and BFG?

Idea: I wonder if i buy the Corsair and then take it back in a few days and get a refund then order a modular Corsair or another good brand (seasonic, antec ?) from Newegg? This way i can get rid of the gift card, get a better modular power supply and not spend but $8-14 out of pocket? :) If you like this what PS would you suggest near $100-$120 total price shipped?

I know Thermaltake is known for its cpu cooling products, but not so sure if their psu products are that great compared to established giants Antec and Corsair.

Stay far away from a Best Buy PSU. The last review I saw on them one blew and damaged the test equipment at a little over half its rated wattage and the other wasn't very good at just 75% of load.

The results of today’s foray into Best Buy house branded power supplies as it relates to these two power supplies (the Dynex DX-400WPS and Rocketfish RF-700WPS) leaves us with one piece of advice; if users are tempted to buy either of these power supplies, think again.

CZJZ was never going to buy a house branded Best Buy PSU anyway, so its a non issue. A Corsair PSU bought from Best Buy is just as reliable as a Corsair PSU ordered from elsewhere.

I would stick with Corsair I think. Admittedly I've had 1 Corsair fail on me, but they are quiet PSUs and I did move mine across a whole continent before it died, and it was off for 2 months while that happened. I had a Corsair HX520 which lasted for nearly 3 years before it died. Now I need to send it to America for them to RMA it. Oh well, nice to have it back but I'm not looking forward to paying the postal fees.
