Of the following iphones, which would be the best for jailbreaking and unlocking?

i currently have a 2g iphone unlocked and jailbroken using t-mobile. i'd like to upgrade to a newer model. to this end i've been searching craigslist in my area but am trying to figure out which one i should focus my attention on.

here are the typical choices (i'm excluding the already unlocked/jailbroken models since those would probably be ideal but are rarer or more expensive):

3g new in box
3g upgraded to some in between firmware
3g upgraded to highest possible firmware
3gs new in box
3gs upgraded to some in between firmware
3gs upgraded to highest possible firmware

i've been googling but since i'm at work right now a lot of the results are blocked here.

thanks in advance!

Any 3G is easy because it's not going to be getting anymore iOS updates which means you can use Pwnage Tool and put a custom firmware with the iPad modem firmware so you can have it jailbroken and unlocked.

The 3GSes are a bit harder because of the modem firmware. You can jailbreak up to the highest firmware version but it's dependent on what modem firmware is on the device if you can unlock it.

it looks like there is an unlock available for 3gs for baseband 06.15.00 as long as the phone is jailbroken with 4.2.1 firmware. but from what i've been reading this is an ipad baseband firmware and there are caveats but i can't seem to find out what those are.

I wouldn't do that. Once you unlock it to the iPad baseband, you will never be able to get a stock firmware ever again.

iPhone Dev Team does still support iPhone 3GS so in their next release of ultrasn0w it may have an unlock for the later versions of the modem firmware of the 3GS.

ok, i helped my friend and took the new in box 3gs 8gb off her hands. so my first step will be to determine the baseband firmware version, correct? how can i do this if i only have a t-mobile sim and would presumably be required to activate with an at&t sim on connecting to my mac? would i be able to insert my t-mobile sim and circumvent the activation screen?

Just use greenpois0n to hacktivate it so you can use it without a sim.

Good choice of picking the 3GS.
The 3G has the same speed as the 2G so no reason to upgrade to that.
Since its a 3GS 8G, 99% chance it has the latest baseband on there.
Since you need to use it for T-mobile I would go ahead and upgrade to the ipad baseband.
Its not like you're messing with a $500 phone.
I've upgraded about 3 3GS to the 06.15.00 band and have zero problem.
I did one when the unlock first came out and it still work flawlessly.

THe only problem now is, you ahve to wait for jailbreaks to update your phone. Always. Customized ipsws.

ok everyone, this is hopefully the last question 🙂

i have a work blackberry with at&t. can i swap its sim into the iphone just to get through activation on my mac and then check the firmware versions? if i do this, will this in any way affect my work blackberry when i put the sim back in it?

thanks everyone.

just for reference for anyone who was following this thread (which i doubt 🙂) i was able to swap my blackberry's at&t sim and activate through itunes. i switched it back to the blackberry afterwards and everything is fine.

the os is 4.2.1 and the modem firmware is 05.15.04 so i will either use greenpois0n or pwnagetool to jailbreak while i wait for a possible non-ipad baseband unlock.

thanks all for your help!

EDIT: does anyone have opinions on jailbreaking with pwnagetool vs. greenpois0n? from what i can tell, greenpois0n is much easier but pwnagetool allows for me to have a custom ipsw that i can keep on my mac for future restoring purposes.
