Is there any way to tell the number of platters in a an internal drive just from the model numbers?

I'm interested in buying 2-3x 1-2 TB 3.5'' internal drives (Seagate, WD, Toshiba, don't really care which manufacturer) and I'd prefer that they have 1 TB platters.
 
Yeah, get the WD Red. The 1TB WD Green is also a 1TB platter.

If you get the Seagates, you will probably get the 1TB platters but it's not guaranteed.

Can't speak for Toshiba.
 
So the WD reds and greens are guaranteed to be 1 TB platters (assuming I'm getting 1 TB or 2 TB capacity, rather than like 1.5 TB capcity)?

What about the blues/blacks?
 
The 1TB Greens are 1 platter. Other sizes can be mix and match. I thought the Reds used 1 platter, glad someone corrected me.

If you can physically inspect the Seagates, then you can tell by the notch in the upper right hand of the drive. If it goes all the way down to the label it is the 1TB platter. If it stops short it is the smaller platter version.

I thought the Toshibas were all 1TB platters, though. It might be worth looking into.
 
Yikes, this sounds like a mess.

I was checking out the data on that website, and it looks like MOST 1 TB drives are 1x1TB platter, but if you get any larger capacity than that, you start to play platter roulette.
 
I think you *may* be able to tell with some drives if they are 1 platter by their thickness. My Seagate 1 platter/1tb was much thinner than a 2 platter/1tb model.
 
These days generally 750 platters. 🙂

One way to determine that is look at the seektimes. No a single platter is faster and it shows. 🙂
