# of people mapping 1 share in Win2k

is there a fixed number of connections that can be made to a mapped drive on win2k?
I have a shared drive within my office and most the employees need to connect up to it.
However Im being told on the client machine that "no more users can access"

Share is set to "maximum" whatever that is...

I think its 10 concurrent connections per share.
This only applies to Win2k Pro. Win2k Server editions have no such limit.
I know, I was assuming from his limited description it was 2K Pro. 🙂

yeah sorry it is pro... I figured it was as such... but had to confirm.

I have an office-wide application (client/server) that needs to be accessed by everyone on and off during the day. I assume that if more than 10 people hit the server (the limited machine) share they will get an error?

<g> Read the EULA...at least for XP Home, more than 10 users on your network using your comp as a server, and you no longer are legally allowed to use it for such(it becomes too server-like, and you must buy a server edition of the OS)

Or just get a cheapo PC box, stick a big harddrive and a UPS in it, and install Linux + SAMBA on it. You can have as many concurrent connections as you'd like. Probably be a bit faster too. (just remember to keep it up to date)

that would be a MUCH better option...if you want easy configuration, go with SuSE - free download edition avaliable for those who don't want to shell out the $90 for the cd's:

SuSE 9.1 install via FTP tutorial

getting the first portion of the install up and running is a bit tough, but after that, it's pretty easy

If you want a bit more speed, and don't mind getting your feet wet(actually, getting dunked under), try slackware.
