OEM vs Retail for Windows XP

Is there any difference between an OEM version (from Compaq) and a regular retail version of Windows XP pro? And could I use the OEM to install it on a non-Compaq machine w/o any problems? Thanks.

The OEM version is more or less a "prebulit OS" for that Compaq and will not work on another machine (unless it's the same model Compaq).

The retail version will install on any hardware that XP is compatable with.

There are a few ways software is being distrbuted. Retail Box, OEM, and Pre-installed with Restore cd given. You can use either the OEM or Retail for a new computer. If you have a Compaq restore cd that is only good with certain compaq machines. This includes files to restore the OS and drivers for compaq specific setups.

OEM software is different from Retail in that Microsoft does not support the OEM. OEM is to be distributed with a NEW PC ONLY, and that New PC builder is required to provide tech support. The software is the same, but the way it is sold and supported is different. Microsoft can tell the difference by you code. The OEM version has an OEM # that you type in to install the software. Retail has a Key Code # that is used to setup the software.

Hope this helps

Good point, I took it for granted when he said "from Compaq" assuming that it was what he recieved with his Compaq. The restore CD is OEM, however it is not a true MS XP Pro install CD such as the OEM CD you would get from Newegg.

Thanks for the clarification.

Hey. thanks a lot for the advice. i was looking to buy an OEM windows xp, but now i understand better of what i might be buying

There is nothing wrong with buying OEM software, but make sure it is True OEM or what they call DSP- this is Delivery Service Partner. This is the full version of the software.....

Do not buy anything that is considered Restore or Recovery.......

You can find very competitive pricing for this at www.pricewatch.com

search for win xp pro dsp

make sure it comes with COA, CD, and Manual.

some companies are selling without the CD... The retail version is about $100 more so might be a better buy!
