Is there anything wrong with buying the OEM version of a T-bird? I want to buy an 850 and o/c it, so I'm not worried about the warranty. I don't know if I should get the retail or OEM. Are they lesser quality or do they not overclock as well? Any info would be great.

should be the same. The only thing i would do , is not buy OEM from a place that sells pre-overclocked processors.

Retail will guarantee that you get the speed grade you asked for (not remarked) and it will be a way to be completely positive that your fan and heatsink are good for the processor (since they're already included).

If you trust your vendor and are competent enough to get a good hs/fan, OEM saves you some bucks.

Also, the warrantee is only 15 days with OEM, 1 year if you buy it with a fan, and 3 years for retail.

I wouldn't waste the money on an 850 if you are going to overclock. Just bought 4 OEM Tbirds, 2 750's and 2 800's. All will do 900 with no problem, but only one 750 and one 800 will run in the 950 area. The point is, the 750's seem to overclock just as high as the 800's do for less money... and I would bet that the 700's would too! Save yourself some money and go with a lower end Tbird and just close the L1 bridges.

You don't mention what motherboard you will be using. All four of mine have the KT7-Raid. Also, the testing was done with an Alpha PAL6035.

I will be using the KT7-RAID also. Part of the reason I want the 850 is because if buy some fat chance I can't o/c I will still have an 850. And my other reason for getting the 850 being that I want it to o/c to 1GHz or maybe a little higher. Where did you buy your OEM T-birds and when? I want to make sure I get that still has its multiplier pins.

The retail 800 that I purchased at Buy.com is topped out at 982MHz with a Alpha 6035 & Delta Black Label fan. Never gets more than 40 degrees Cel. So I know its not a cooling thing preventing me from running stable at a Gig. It will boot Windows and run at a Gig, but is not stable in 3DMark2000, and will not run UT for long. I tried it with a straight multiplier increase running the memory at 133MHz, and also a combo of multiplier/FSB adjustments. It kicks ass at 982 with the multiplier set at 900, and the FSB at 105/35 + 4 (109) The RAM is running at 144MHz CAS2,
and gets a Sandra memory benchmark of 531/609!!
