OEM P4 heatsink...lap it?

I just purchased a preowned 1.6a P4. It appears that the original pad was scraped off in favor of a different compound.
Should I lap this heatsink or just clean it good w/rubbing alcohol & put some artic silver on it & go?
I assume the artic silver is applied to the P4 the same way it is to the AMD? Just more area to cover?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The retail HSF cools pretty darn good even with all the tool marks on it. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to lap it but I can't see it helping too much, eitther. I've put a lot of Northwood rigs together and have never had any temp issues with the retail HSF, even with moderate OC's.

I'm pairing this cpu up with the Albatron PX845 board, so obviously i'm gonna overclock.
What type of overclock can I expect with a stock heatsink/fan?
You guys that have this cpu and/or board...what were your bios settings for multiplier, fsb, and memory settings?
Thanks again.

Stock heatsink even with AS3 probably will only be good for around 2.2-2.3ghz then the heat could become an issue..the problem with the stock hsf is that the rpms are way to slow and the 70mm fan is too small to push enough cfm to cool it properly.....

I say go ahead and try it and if the 1.6 is a good one and can go higher then speed listed above either mod the fan to run faster or look at another cooler....

I run an Alpha 8942t w/ Ys tech adjustable 80mm fan.....cools much better then my avc sunflower did (8-9c better under load) and my avc sunflower killed my stock one. My temps at 2.4ghz was about where my sunflower was at 2.74ghz.....

Just be aware of it.....But before blowing cash you may not need if it doesn't oc that well for you, go ahead and try it out....

Is there a trick to replacing the stock hsf?
It appears that the Alpha 8942t bolts on & I ain't sure how to take the original bracket off the mb.
It also doesn't look like the mb I got (albatron PX845PEV) has tabs on the socket for clip-on heatsinks.

The 1.6A and 2.53 use the exact same HS/Fan. I'm pretty sure the higher GHz CPU's also use the same one. I haven't seen one yet, so I'm not sure. I put together a PC for a friend recently. 1.6A @ 2.53 GHz. Stock HS/Fan with ASII. Works just fine.

They use the same fan but I don't think it is running at the same rpms...There is no way my 1.6 could have done muchmore then 2.4ghz with the stock fan...It was getting 64-66c under load...I used avc sunflower and it got it down to 56-58c load and the alpha gets it now to 50c now with system temps around 25c....

I would find it hard to imagine Intel would think the same unit good for a 1.6a would be good for a 2.53ghz cpu.....

I guess if you have an asus mobo maybe the temps may look fine....other boards I bet the temps under load will be in the 60's....

Hmmm. I have the same mobo as you do. My 1.6a @ 2.4 GHz, 1.65 Vcore does not go over ~ 50C load (games or MPEG encoding). Prime95 will get it up to 53 - 54C. The 1.6A @ 2.53 1.6 V on the Asus goes to ~ 50C. This is with a ~ 30C case temp. All reading are via MBM5. Both stock HS/Fan with ASII. All the fans are 70mm variable speed. They generally all run ~ 2500 rpm
on average. When the case temp gets hot, they will go up to ~ 3200 RPM.

Its actually the other way around. The HS/Fan on a 1.6A is way overkill. I find it interesting that Intel uses the same HS/Fan for all the P4s as well. The S370 CPUs each had a different HS/Fan for every CPU speed. It may be because of the P4 mounting design. The size of the HS must be the same to fit into that post style mounting mechanism.

ON my boards the plastic heatsink retention clip is easily removed by popping the plastic plugs through hole sin the mobo...It is then those holes you use to screw heatsink to the mobo...I have had 4 mobos and all have easy remove retention clips and the holes availbale for an alpha...

I used the retail hsf on my 2.66 @ 3GHz (58c under load @ 1.65v) an it used the SAME hsf as my 1.6a.

My Intel stock HS with AS o/c my 1.8A at 2.6 easily. Idle 32C and load 47C. Good enough for me.
