OEM HDD from newegg question

I just bought two 250GB Seagate SATA HDDs from Newegg because of a good price. They came wrapped in the manufacturer's sealed static-free bags and have the original Seagate 5 year warrantee on them. Just no cables or CD, etc. If you've been building before and have some motherboard boxes sitting around, scarf them up and get the SATA cable sets out of them. They are the same cables that come with retail HDDs except they are separate data and power cables instead of having a single connector for both functions. If you don't have any, you'll have to buy cables separately, so cost out cables + S&H and see if retail or OEM HDD is better total cost.

Warranty can vary on OEM drives too as the warranty is what the reseller of the OEM drives has negotiated with the mfr. Always smart to check the warranty status of new drives when you get them to be sure you are getting the warranty the reseller claims.

I just bought a high performance notebook drive off ebay and the seller claimed a 3 yr warranty, but it actually had no warranty other than thru the mfr. that bought the drive originally (Lenovo) for inclusion in their laptop units (I was aware that this was likely before I even bid on the item). So I went back to the seller and he covered the cost of a 3yr warranty thru Square Trade. I've found that all the OEM drives I have bought thru the top resellers on the Web like Newegg, ZZF, etc. had the warranty that the reseller claimed. Others might be gray market (overstock from an OEM buyer like HP, etc.) which may not have any warranty at all.

Good that you are wary, but follow up to be sure you are covered. Most HDD mfr's Web sites have an online way to verify warranty status.
