OEM Foglights - worth $250 on a new car?

I couldn't find a whole lot here in terms of foglight discussions here, so here's one. 🙂
I've got a 2012 Subaru Impreza en route to a dealership, and I'm pondering adding the foglights to it. The picture there nicely shows where they're mounted.
They want $460 total for the parts + installation. ($300 + 1.5hrs labor)
Ok, looks like they're available for $250 as a kit, that I'd install myself.

The main question is, do they do anything? That said, there's not a whole lot out here in the way of fog, at least not that comes to mind, but on some winter nights there is heavy wind-blown snow that's like driving through a pallet of inkjet paper.
Besides that, are they worth that price?

The threads I found elsewhere were all over the place in terms of answering the main question of their inherent value, regardless of price, but some of it seems to be muddled by people who buy aftermarket foglights and don't point them properly, so 1) They don't point where they're supposed to so that may reduce their effectiveness, and 2) Perhaps because they aren't pointed right, they blind other drivers, which earns the ire of some drivers. It sounds like properly made and pointed foglights should have a low and flat beam that would not become excessively intrusive to another driver's vision.

Going through the user manual for the Impreza, it looks like the foglights will only come on if the regular headlights are also turned on. From what I read, some jurisdictions do not permit independent operation of foglights anyway.

(And feel free to check out my other updated thread, link also in sig. 🙂)

No idea off hand how well they'll work. Can you test drive one on the lot that has fog lights to see for yourself?

Man i hate that & there are a lot of vehicles on the road like that around here.
I used to think it was because my car sat low but now i have a Ford Escape & i still get blinded by fog lights, even on some cars.

Install it yourself? Typically on Subarus there's no bumper cutting involved, just pop out a trim piece and replace with one with a hole for the fog light.

If you or anyone you trust is mechanically inclined at all with wiring. I would buy a set that fit the holes, and wire them up. With most current vehicles, there is some stock wiring/switches available. If you want the stock swtich, that is the only thing I would consider buying from the dealer.

What about the controls? Are those already going to be present, or does something there need to be installed too?

Ah, sounds like that might be a "maybe" for the controls already being there.

Oh well, it's not really something that must be done before I leave the lot. I can check out the controls on it once it arrives, and ask what the kit comes with.

Also, look to buy the kit from an online dealer. Saves a a few bucks...

EDIT: Kit should come with all the wiring/switches necessary. Its all plug-and-play. Hardest steps would be removing the bumper cover and fishing the wiring through the firewall. But hell, its also completely possible that the wiring is already there, just add the lights/switch. I'd search through some other forums and see if anyone has documented an install.

Ah, cool. Updating title...🙂

I'll check around for information, though the 2012 Imprezas haven't been out and about too terribly long.

Some foglights are good, some won't do anything. And they really don't do anything in fog or blowing snow, anyway -- that's a straight visibility problem. The biggest difference in my experience has been with a snowy road. It's nice to have the area right in front of your car illuminated when you're not exactly sure where the road is.

for $250 i'd just get it done at the dealership. that's probably what you'll end up paying for getting aftermarket and labor.

OP edited to clarify.
$460 is for dealer installation.
$250 is for the kit, and I install.

And it's sounding like foglights might not be terribly beneficial, at least not for snow.

got it. $210 for installation is crazy. i regret not getting the fogs when i bought my car. improves the look of the car. it should be a one hour labor charge at the most. take it to a honda, nissan, toyota dealer and see what they'd charge for the install.

I've never found foglights to actually do anything. If you don't have HID projector lights, put the $250 to doing that. If you will have HID projectors, well, save your $250.

I have driven through thundersnow before, not to mention thick fog. It helps quite a bit. Not just for you to see but to be seen.
