OEM CPU's

Hi all,
Like many people, I'm planning a conroe build, but I will be using an aftermarket HSF for noise and OC'ing reasons.

So, is it possible to get an OEM chip, without the stock fan, etc.? My only real reason for getting an OEM would be to save a few bucks but, unlike harddrives and other components, newegg (or any other e-tailer I know of) does not carry OEM cpu's. Is there a reason for this? Does no one sell them OEM? Thanks for the info!

there's a few in the FS/FT forum. Newegg used to carry some OEMs but they have not in a while. It probably has something to do with the market for them.

I would rather get one from an actual "store" or online store than buy one off of some person through the internet, as you can return a faulty product when it is purchased through a retailer. But I guess there are no "official" places to get them, like newegg?

OEMs usually have a much shorter warranty, like, one-year instead of three...if your lucky.

well, I looked around and eWiz is selling OEM C2D. The E6400 OEM was $0.38 more than the retail version, so whatever. I'll just get the retail and throw away the HSF

Intel and AMD have both been trying to kill off OEM cpu availability in the retail channel for the last few years.

Actually, I'd try Yahoo shopping as well. I've been getting terrific results from there lately & it's replaced Froogle as my #1 shopping site.

I wouldn't advise that you throw it away. I think the warranty is tied to your HSF also.
