odometer legal issue

The odometer on my '87 BMW 325e broke before I bought it. It's stuck at 225K miles for who-knows-how-long. I don't really feel like fixing it unless I can get the car to be reliable again, and drive it on a regular basis. Anybody know of any federal and/or state laws concerning broken odometer? Thanks.

I don't think it's an issue unless you are trying to sell it.

And with 225K on it who would buy it .

As long as you list it as 'not actual mileage' when/if you sell it, I don't think it's a problem. When I had my bike inspected (aftermarket gauge system), he took the mileage off of that and marked it as 'not actual'.

Like already said, as long as you're not selling it you've nothing to worry about. If you do sell you must disclose in writing that the odometer isn't working and the mileage is unknown.

Most states have a box to check on the title to say that it's not the actual mileage.

Some states require a working odometer to pass yearly inspection.
