Oddly low temps

So the other day, it was fairly hot, and i got message while playing UT2004 that said my cpu was at 90C and I should shut down. I did. Instantly. When i cranked it back up a half an hour or so later it was fine. Now the temps (as reported by the MSI core center app) are reading around 16-18C at idle instead of where they used to be around 38-40C at idle. Any ideas? Did the temp sensor just get fried? Thanks.

Sounds like the temp sensor isn't working properly.

probably the temp censor was lowered permanently as a result of the heat. how in the world did a cpu amd 64 with a zalman get so freakin hot?

must have burned out your sensor. make sure the hsf is seated properly, and no dust on it.

You could also try a bios update if one is available, but that probably won't help, just a thought.

I've got no idea how your CPU got that hot in the first place. I thought most boards will automatically shut down at around 75C/80C.

Which temp is it that is 16-18C ? MoBo or CPU?

His sensor was most likely reading incorrectly to start with.

i've got no idea how i got the temp up so high. it was a 90F day and the cpu was idling in the forties. But it did this after probably less than 20minutes of play so i'm guessing my heatsink wasn't doing what it's supposed to. It's the cpu temp that's reading 13C now. i'm gonna take a look at the heatsink soon, but i'm guessing i'll never get accurate temps again.

I'm pretty sure you never got accurate temps in the first place. AMD says the max operating temp of a 3500 is 70. Most people set their auto shutoff at about 65, and I doubt your mobo would allow a value over 80. Somethings screwey; what kind of thermal interface do you have between your Zalman and CPU?

if a cpu is 13 c it has been on for about 3 seconds.
