I'm getting a new car pretty soon, so I've been wondering what things I could do as far as protecting it.

I have installed DVR (CCTV) Type crap for a few businesses and houses around and I would like to try to install one in the car.

The problem?

Power.........I know I can add an extra battery and then only have positive charge coming from the alternator/main battery, I believe there is another way to have only the single extra battery power drain when the car is off.

I don't care about processing power, the essentials to this project would be Camera aspect. I would like to try to have active recording setup on it and I would be willing to buy an extremely large flash card (For power consumption) or just using a laptops hard drive. The monitor doesn't need to be mounted, I will use some kind of quick 9" inch screen that I can remove at will.

Questions are.

1. Power consumption, what can I do to help it
2. Heat, it gets freaky hot inside of a car with no airflow (I could route a small fan with a vent from the outside on the floorboard if I really have too)
3. Concealed camera placement. I thought about having one facing the back on the visor. The other one facing the drivers door (could be on the dash/or facing up towards the window at an angle) And one Quality camera (mounted and in great line of site) For accident purposes or recording dumb shits on the road to report to cops)

Of course, this is going into a brand new car, so, concealment and a clean install is essential (I will do that part with help of a car audio shop) I'd figure the most time I'd need to record in increments would be 12 hours. I know I could get much much longer have it setup like that on a specific camera like the front to record in real-time for 1 hour >)

I know this is a crazy project, and it WILL be tied in with a proper ignition lockout/paged alarm system.

I would just LOVE to be able to scare the ****** out of a soccer mom and her little brats when they ding the car and have actual evidence for once when someone hits the car (microphone placed in a good location)

The car will be a daily driver, so I will be providing plenty of juice to it at all times, and I can even turn it off at night as I have two on my driveway (on the mailbox post for license plates and over the garage)

Am I nuts? or just careful....

i think you're nuts, but it would be cool. check mp3car.com for some good ideas on what you would need and how to run the cpu inside your car. they have some really good ideas about layout, the power supply, and IIRC they have a section on cameras. i thought some guy had a infared camera for night time driving.

I think ur nuts. I mean if its like a average car, I wouldnt bother with a security cam or w/e. How would u get the video if the car is stolen. Insurance should cover it and how many times does ur car get hit that you have to put a cam on it.
