The saga continues through several threads I'd posted recently -- here, in other forums -- certainly the "OS" forum.
I've built a machine using a spare Asus Striker 680i motherboard I found in my parts locker which had been RMA'd and returned. It seemed that I only needed to replace the PLCC/BIOS to resurrect it and run it with a Conroe E6600. That is profoundly confirmed, too. Both parts probably had not been used for more than two or three months.
The machine is meant to use as a WHS-2011 server, and is currently running just fine with licensed add-ins and AF WD Blue disks.
It has 2x2GB = 4GB of G.SKILL "PQ" DDR2-800 RAM.
I have a spare 2x2GB set of the same G.SKILL PQ's -- also from "the parts locker -- one of the sticks having been RMA'd and returned. [I trust G.SKILL about these things.]
I remember that the i680 chipset or more specifically the Striker board had problems with filling all four slots. So I had avoided doing so.
Was this a problem intrinsic to the Striker mobo? Or was it a problem with the i680 chipset? Or was it some sort of random glitch originating with loose QC when the boards were produced? Or was it some sort of problem specific to the choice of memory? I had experienced the troubles right away (in 2007/08) with a set of Crucial Ballistix matching those already installed, but that was with a different Striker i680 board.
Any insights would be appreciated -- balancing the trouble I've taken with this thread and the trouble I might discover just by putting the sticks in the machine and giving it a try.
Despite the residual misgivings about that chipset and mobo, the system seems to be rock-solid stellar at the moment.
What do you think, veterans?
