Odd X-Fi problems

I've been having some strange issues with my X-Fi. It's one of the OEM ones that AscendTech sold for around $55 for a while; I believe the model number is X-Fi SB0460.

When I installed it I used the modded support.cab files and Vista x64 ISO install disc provided in this thread. 5.1/headphone sound works fine, I believe EAX and CM3D-SS or whatever works fine, except that some features wouldn't install, including DTS settings and the EAX console.

Here are some problems/questions:

1) When I see screenshots of other people's settings, I always see a pretty GUI. I can't seem to find that; the closest I've got is Creative Audio Console (which is pretty weak when it comes to configuration). Is that the EAX console?

2) Does anyone know how I can install the programs I'm missing? Whenever I try to install, it gives me some strange error with something like DoInstall failed at xxxxxblahblah... something like that.

3) How do I configure my flexijack, through the EAX console?

4) My microphone acts weird when I use it. Whatever input goes into it comes out through the speakers (i.e. it's capable of causing feedback). If I put on headphones and blow into the mic I can hear it. I have absolutely no idea how to fix this; I've already spent a lot of time in the Vista Sound options and the Creative Audio Console.

Thanks for your time.

0) You really shouldn't use modified drivers. The latest driver release is actually very nice.

1) You can order a CD from Creative containing the Vista version of all of their utilities.

2) I'm assuming they're the XP versions. You need #1.

3) The audio console controls it AFAIK.

4) Fixed in the latest drivers.

The modified drivers I was using only modified the support.cab file on the CD. From the thread that I linked to, it was so that the drivers would see my card as a full retail version, instead of a crippled OEM version.

The funny thing is that at first, none of the programs would install; I then uninstalled everything and reinstalled, and about half the programs installed correctly. I did eventually find an unmodified Vista version of the install CD, but that didn't help. The XP CD won't even begin to install on my system.

I did install the Creative Console Launcher and now I have the GUI interface that everyone else has. Brings a few more options to the table.

I'm using the latest 2.15.0004 drivers, but the mic still has the input->output problem. At this point I've learned to deal with it, because I guess I sound fine on Skype, but if I could figure out a way to fix it that would be great.

The mic thing may also be a simple setting issue. Control Panels -> Sound -> Right Click On Speakers -> Properties -> Levels -> Microphone, should be muted.
