odd win2k problem....winsock? tcp??

i've now found my second win2k machine with an odd (to me) problem. they are both set for dhcp. they appear to binding correctly to tcp/ip in that i can ping out, ipconfig /all shows everything as normal. but i can't connect to anything on the internet. web pages won't pull up, lotus notes (email package) won't connect. basically, anything that requires tcp/ip won't work. i removed and readded tcp/ip, but still nothing.

again, i can ping what i'm trying to get to, but can't actually connect. any advice??

hmmm...

bearshare isn't installed on either machine. but i would bet some other app could have done this!!

thanks. i will try this out and let you know what i come up with!

i can ping via ip. but not by hostname.

oddly enough, if i remove tcp/ip and reinstall it on one of the machines, everything works. until i reboot it! then it hoses up again.

what about iMesh or AG Satellite? do you have SaveNow installed?

I initially just uninstalled Bearshare, did what Ladi said, and it worked. But then when I rebooted, I had the same problem. Luckily she told me it was not Bearshare that was the problem, but the spyware that was bundled with it - SaveNow. Try uninstalling that.

or how about New Net? I was forced to install that with Bearshare too, I'm not sure which one causes the problem though...

after you reboot and it is not working, go to a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all
is it showing you your DNS server?

type in nslookup and hit enter,
then type server=x.x.x.x (the ip addresses that is showing up in ipconfig /all) and hit enter.
then type in a name you want to resolve - i.e. www.anandtech.com

you should get the IP addresss back for it.

if the above does not work - post what info you get back from the above steps.
