Odd USB problem, possibly Win8 related

I've built two computers of approximately the following spec:

Core i3/i5
ASUS P8Z77-M PRO (BIOS 1805/15 IIRC)
Crucial M4 128GB SSD
Corsair CX430
DVDRW
Coolermaster Elite 342 with front 2x USB 2.0 ports
I've added two rear USB 2.0 ports

These are in a long line of very similar spec computers (the same board), but these two are the only two that have had USB problems - sometimes, when the computer starts, it reckons that one or two USB devices haven't been recognised (one is a USB flash drive I've been using for years, the other is a Logitech RX250 wired mouse).

Thinking about it, there's a vague possibility that it could be the mouse as that's the newcomer (apart from Win8)

If I reconnect the device in question to the same port, it works. I'm definitely only using the USB 2.0 ports so I doubt that it is related to USB 3.0 drivers.

With the previous computer I thought I had fixed the problem by reconnecting the USB connections for the front ports, but now I'm having the same problems on the latest build, I'm not so sure.

I'm going to try reconnecting both USB connections immediately but it seems a bit implausible that I've been hooking up USB ports for years without a hitch and suddenly I get it wrong four times in a row.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

I'll stick to using the same mouse for the time being until the problem reoccurs and then try my trusty MS trackball that I have been using for installs for years.

I doubt you have the same problem, but mine results in the same problem description.

Mainly, devices (eg, external HDDs) and USB cables/connectors which I have used for years are probably wearing out their connector contacts plus the mini B ports on certain HDD enclosures are probably getting dirty as I carry them daily in a tote bag of my stuff.

Try this: Spray out your connectors (computer and external device) with "Deoxit". Be sure to leave a small amount of the spray on the electrical contact surfaces.

Can you recreate the issue when both devices are connected to MB USB ports, not the front ports? Maybe your cable/connector for the case is developing a problem from repeated connects/disconnects. This seems like the most likely reason.

Ok, I've ruled out the mouse. I think there may be a bug in the more recent BIOS versions for this board (I was using 1708 for ages without problems, but the last two boards came with 1805). I've just done the same reconnection job I did on the previous build (using a different USB header for the front ports), and I've had two successful boots so far (in terms of both USB devices coming on without issue). I think I'll continue the tedious route of 'switch off, switch on, check again') for the time being.

I'm pretty sure it's not the ports themselves because what are the chances of two cases of having the same intermittent port problem (I've been using this case for ages as well), and the USB memory stick gets plenty of use every week on other computers without any problems.

Before doing the USB header change, what I noticed this time and remembered had happened before was that neither device was recognised on boot, then I pulled out the memory stick and the mouse came on (different USB header to the memory stick).
