Odd Turn Off Computer screens in Windows XP

I just finished setting up Windows XP Pro with SP2 on a new computer and have a puzzling -- and annoying -- problem. When I click on Start/Turn Off Computer, instead of the familiar blue box with the three buttons for Standby, Turn Off and Restart I get a box, blue at the top and grey at the bottom, labeled Shut Down Windows. In the blue portion it says Microsoft Windows XP Professional and has a banner line across it saying turnoff computer. I can click on an arrow beside it to choose restart etc. By the same token, the start up screens are similiar -- and unfamiliar. I can't find these screens in any of my Windows XP books since they all show the familiar box with the three buttons. There must be a simple choice to get back to familiar territory. I have gone into properties from the desktop and clicked on Windows Classic, Windows XP etc. with no effect.

Help would be appreciated.

Go into Control Panel - User Accounts - then click on Change the way users log on. You will see the different selections there.

Yeah, you seem to be in non-Welcome Scree, domain-style login mode.

If you follow JohnAn2112's instructions, you'll see options for Fast User Switching and the Welcome Screen.

I think just turning on the Welcome Screen will get the shut down box you want. Enable FUS if you want (it lets multiple accounts to be logged on at the same time).

JohnAn2112 and scottws,

Thanks for the advice. At first I couldn't make the selection since Offline folders were enabled, but XP steered me to closing that function after which I could make the changes you suggested. Now I have the familiar log off screens, but still have an unwanted Welcome screen. That should be easy to get rid of.

Thanks for your help.

When you click on Change the users sign on and off, uncheck the box that says Use Welcome Screen. That'll do it for ya. 🙂

JohnAn2112,
Thanks again for the reply. I had solved the unwelcome "welcome" page problem in a more indirect way before I saw your response. I went to run and entered "control userpasswords2" and then unchecked the box "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". That did it.

Thanks again. Now all of my computers have the same turn on and turn off screens -- and they all log on the owner of the machine directly in bootup.
