Odd Thunderbird problem

I'm helping a coworker get an email client on her computer. I choose Thunderbird due to liking firefox so much, but don't use it personally. I can set up the account just fine. it works, but when I close thunderbird the next time I run it I have to start all over with setting up the account, and all the saved emails are gone. anyone ever run into this problem before?
