odd start up delay

This is tough to explain but here goes:

Computer is off and I turn it on. XP loads fine and the desktop is up. For about 45 seconds nothing happens. During this interval I'm unable to open some apps, namely, my dsl connection icon. After the 45 sec I hear the hard drive rumble (I think it's the hd) and local area connection 2 spring to life in the tray (I think some other programs also come alive). I'm then able to open whatever I want and the computer works perfectly.

Some specs:

neo2 plat/ 3200+/ 1 gb ocz el plat rev 2/ 6800 gt/ 74gb raptor
no router

under network connections:

Broadband: sbcyahoo, connected, firewalled WAN miniport (PPOE)
Lan or High Speed Internet (3 icons):

1) Local Area Connection disabled, firewalled, Nvidia nforce Networking Co...
2) Local Area Connection 2, connected, firewalled, Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family...
3) 1394 Connection, connected, firewalled, 1394 Net Adapter

Any ideas on how to solve this slightly annoying problem? It would be nice if I could get right onto the internet after boot up.

I'm willing to bet it has to do with your network connections all set to Auto-Negotiate. You can configure each separately by going to Network Options > Local Area Connection(1,2,3) >R.Click Properties > Configure > Advanced > Connection Type. If you set your NIC's to their respective values then XP won't get caught up auto-configuring them at each boot-up.

It is set to auto negotiate.

If I hold the cursor over the lan connection icon in the tray it shows 10.0Mbs so I would think that I should set it to that value, however, there are two 10.0Mbs choices: one says half duplex the other says full duplex. Which one?

The delay is your pppoe connection authenticating. My bet is you/someone called DSL tech support and they check "always dial my default connection/dial when a connection is not present" recently.

To set your computer to manually connect to DSL. Control panel->internet options-> connections tab-> put bullet on "never dial a connection"
Apply and ok.

You'll should be able to use DSL icon and connect manually. Let me know if that worked.
