I was driving home tonight on the turnpike and was slowly coming up behind a police car. I was going just a hair above the speedlimit (about 7-8 over, in a 65mph) and he started to pull into a rest area. A few moments later and about 2-3 miles down the highway I notice a car rolling up behind me quite fast. I'm just pulling onto a exit ramp and I see the lights come on so I pull over. Alledgedly I was doing 90 mph in a 65 mph?

He asked where I was goinga nd all that stuff and then took my license and insurance back to his car. Upon returning he handed me the ticket and asked for me to sigh. Before doing that I asked if got me with radar and he definitely said yes. Then I asked to see the radar and he said he didn't have it on display because he was pacing me and a "radar-like" device monitors his speed and he can compare it to mine? By the way the guy was extreamely nervous and shaky at this point. So I asked if he could explain again how exactly he clocked me? He then said I could mail payment in and to have a good and safe night.

I'm very stumped by this as I really wasn't sure what he was talking about. Then I just pulled out my ticket when I got home and noticed that he has radar, air, pace, and stationary all checked on the ticket? Can that all be correct? From the exit I got on at to the one I got off at I passed about a total of 5-6 cars (20 mile stretch of road) and he was the only officer around when I was getting the ticket.

Can anyone explain to me how all those items are checked off?

While it's kinda acceptable, it's still breaking the posted speed limit, pay the ticket and be done w/ it Busie23 :)

A ticket for 25 over is a hefty fine. Especially if he was only doing 7-8 miles per hour over the speed limit.

Not sure what this means...I've never received a ticket...yet! hehe.

Edit: I really just don't understand how it seems to indicate he was able to guage your speed by pacing you while stationary with a radar?...

I wasn't aware of that minendo, I never got a speeding ticket when I had a car.

man that pig was on drugs or something. fight it...definitely. i'm sure you'll get off if he can't prove that you were doing 90.

I'm not questioning weather or not I was speeding. I was going along with traffic and doing slightly more than the posted sign just like any other normal person does on an open 3 and 4 lane turnpike that crosses ohio, with very light- no traffic. I'm interested in why 4 different types of speed detecting devices were aledgedly used? Are there any police officers in here who might know any info on this? particularly from Ohio? Does not make any sense to me?

20 mph and over the speed limit can result in wreckless driving charges.

I have received my fair share of tickets in my day, but I never remember seeing more than one detection device checked? I'm confused and pissed now. I have always read the thread about fighting a ticket but it seems like a daunting task? Can you go to a court session before hand to get an idea of what will take place or are they closed to the public? Also, If I did go do I have to represent myself as if I were a lawyer or can i just go and ask for an explanation as to what the heck this ticket means? Confused about the whole court process?

I think this depends on the state, as I haven't had problems with my tickets that were 25 over. Traffic schooled them away. :)

Generally you represent yourself unless you can easily afford a lawyer. The ticket should have the court date listed. AFAIK, the sessions are open to the public. Basically you should have a clear and concise arguement with your concerns about the ticket and why you feel it's unjustified.

Really depends on the judge.

Ok if he pulls into a rest area and I'm still doing 70ish down the highway and he slows down to say 30ish to go throught the rest area, he is going to need to do some serious speed to catch up to me, right? Any math wizards out ther care to figure out this word problem? I'm guessing I was a good mile in front of him by the time he got out of the rest area so off course he is going to assume I was going real fast because he is going so fast to catch up to me that he miss judges my actual speed?

I didn't even see the judge. In CA, anyway, their policy is 25 mph of under over the speed limit is eligible for traffic school, though you can only do this once every 18 months.

In Texas if the officer makes a single mistake on the ticket he writes it is invalid. Take it to court and see what happens. Maybe he won't show and you will get off.

In Texas you can only go 24mph over for defensive driving (driving school).

you can figure this out using calculus. if you can reference the time it can tell you the fastest possible speed you could possibly have gone in the given amount of time on a given length. you have all of the variables except time.

Take to court!! It's your right!

I once got stopped when I passed a cop on I75 (70mph limit). I was going 77. I slowly passed him. He told me that I was going 82mph when he stopped me. He told me he got me on radar.

I argued and said I was going 74. I told him that I wanted to see it on radar and that I had my camera in the car to take a picture of it. I started to get very mad and accused him of just stopping me because I passed him. I started grilling him about how he was just making me late for my destination.

I then told him that I just got new tires and that I just got my speedometer checked.

He basically left me go without a warning or anything.

When a cop stops you, try to display nothing but confidence. It's not illegal to point out every mistake they make. It's also not illegal to demand to see the radar.

BTW, I'm taking a ticket to court in a week or so because he said I was going 37mph in a school zone. I can actually prove that I was not in the school zone when I was hit with the LIDAR. He wrote the distance of 176ft on the ticket... 176ft from where he admitted he was located is still about 20ft outside the school zone. Stupid stupid cops.

I can't stand traffic cops. It's like they're so used to people just paying the fine that they never even bother to do things right. It's downright rotten.

It's also rotten that any cute girl gets off scot free while I get a ticket every time I am stopped - except the one time I raised hell.
