Well, being dumb, i just bought and assembled a new cheap computer desk for the new cpu i finally ordered. At the very end of the manual it says that the max weight the top can hold is 50 lbs. Well the monitor alone weighs 50.7 pounds. I also wanted to put the speakers on that top part too. If the speakers weigh about 15 lbs (bringing it all to about 65.7 lbs) do you think i will be ok?

The desk seems pretty sturdy- i just never guessed that the monitor would have weighed 50 lbs.

P.S. Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post kind of questuion in.

well what are your alternatives? If you can return the desk do so and play it safe, otherwise just go for it and you should be fine.

Return it, tell them that as you were putting your computer on it you weighed the components and they weigh well over 50 pounds. Question them why anyone would make a computer desk that's not capable of holding up a computer? Compare it to making a ladder that would support only 100 pounds.

get some plywood and brace it in some inconspicuous spots.
and then wrap the entire structure with duct tape and shellac
it several times. Add in some diodes in a strain guage bridge
arrangement to asses structural stress levels and alert you of
failing structural integrity.

It seems to me that assembling a structure that can support only 50lbs is counterproductive. Why even market such a product?

Well it does seem odd, because it is very sturdy. I sat on it for a few seconds, and it didnt even shake or wobble. I think i should be ok- maybe the instruction manual had a typo? Not sure what kind of wood it is, but it seems to be about the same kind as my other desk which holds a monitor and a computer.

Just put the monitor on one end of the desk so one of the legs or whatever will support it.

It probably means that you won't break it if you put more than 50 lbs. but over time it will probably sag. Also, it could be that because people are so sue happy, they want to make sure they have a disclaimer with the desk. That way when some dumbass puts a fridge on top of it and it collapses and breaks the guys legs, they can point to the disclaimer.
