We have a small, old garage that is more or less covered in ivy.

Last night, around 11pm, we noticed that all the leaves on the ivy were sticking straight out and perpendicular to the wall they growing on -- during the day they are much more "relaxed" and simply hanging down under their own weight. It was very peculiar.

Does anyone know why? I tried googling but to no avail.

flexing its muscles in preparation to tear apart your garage.

LOL Well, it's been on the garage for over 40 years now and there has not been any issues (Ok... the shingles)

If I had to guess, I'd say it's to collect moisture from the night air. I have no idea though.

Some plants' leaves respond to light levels. Can't think of the scientific term ... photo-something. I have a purple shamrock that unfolds leaves in the morning and then folds up at evening. Though if your ivy does this you probably would have noticed sometime in the last 40 years and you wouldn't be posting about the odd behavior.

We don't let our English ivy climb any higher than the brick foundation.
