Odd question about how Windows saves files off of digital camera.

I work at a hospital and a ER doctor has a sony digital camera but he doesn't want to load the sony software onto the hospital computer. The problem is when he would use Window's software to take the pictures off the camera it would save them at like 2MB or something really huge. This made it very hard for him to email them which is what he wanted to do. I opened all of them and saved them as smaller files but I was wondering if there was any way to manipulate that part of window's software?
