Odd PS3/Receiver issue

NutBucket

Lifer
So, finally got my HT going over the weekend (I took monday off, so hush).

My setup is a PS3 --> Denon AVR 790 --> Mitsu DLP (WD-65837).

Previously had the PS3 hooked up directly to the TV. Worked fine with the PS3 set to 1080p. Somehow, when the PS3 is fed through the the receiver, I can't set 1080p on the PS3; the maximum resolution I can set is 1080i. TV verifies 1080i when the XMB is on screen. This is oddity #1

Oddity #2 is that when I put in Saving Private Ryan BR and played it, the TV indicated 1080p 24. I have upscaling disabled on the receiver. Odd....

What I haven't tried is playing GT5 Prologue since that can output @ 1080p.

For the record, I also tried a laptop through the receiver and 1080p passed correctly. This just adds to the odd nature of the issue. Any ideas?

I don't think I've had any problems with PS3 --> Denon 1610 --> Pioneer 5080, but I haven't used it a whole lot since I set it up a couple weeks ago.

Have you tried turning the receiver off and on again AFTER you turn the PS3 on and see the XMB on the screen? I've had a couple times when the receiver passed the wrong resolution from my HTPC, but turning the receiver off and on again has always worked.

If I get the chance, I'll check the resolution on my PS3 tonight.

There might be an issue with your receiver not reporting to the PS3 that it is capable of 1080p resolution, or there could be a problem with the TV reporting to the receiver that it is a 1080p capable display. In either case, the receiver is reporting to the PS3 that it is only a 1080i display path device. If you have a PC with HDMI or a DVI to HDMI cable, you can use either Moninfo, or GetEDID to find the EDID data (Extended Display Identification Data). This will tell you what the devices are saying is supported.
