Odd PS3 problem

I picked up a new PS3 Slim last week, and I've noticed sometimes when I start up the system or turn it off it will make a light popping noise. It sounds like the plastic is popping because of temperture change.

Does anyone else's PS3 do this? This is my first PS3, so I'm not sure if its normal or not. At first I thought it might be the shelf it was sitting on, but I'm pretty sure its coming from the PS3.

The system seems to work great otherwise.

Mine does this too. It has been doing this since I got it (a year and a half ago) but I have 40 gb fat. I think it is because dust is being fried off of the motherboard so it makes that noise.

Thanks.

I've listen to it for a few days, and its the plastic on the PS3 that is doing it. I don't think there is anything wrong with the PS3 because it works fine other than the pops when you start it up or shut it down. It almost always does it when you shut it down, and sometimes on startup. The PS3 is in an open shelf, with nothing around it, so I'm sure its not overheating.

I guess this is random. I seem to find a lot of posts about "cracking/popping" on different forums, but my friends 60GB launch PS3 doesn't do it at all.

I also wonder if it will get better as it "breaks in".

Hmm, I've never experienced that on my launch 60gb. Just check to make sure it's not the HDD or optical drive. It could also be adhesives, etc still curing though seeing as how it's new.

I guess its normal for the Slim. I asked a few friends who have 60GB PS3s and they haven't noticed it.

It seems to be better today, but it was pretty loud on Friday/Saturday when I turned it off. I guess its breaking in.

Anyone else notice this with the new Slim, or other PS3s? Personally its starting to get annoying. Not sure if I should exchange the system though since this might be "normal" for the Slim. The fan/drive/etc... seem really quiet. Just the plastic cracking/popping.

I hear a couple pops after I turn my new slim off as well. I remember hearing them on a launch 20gb as well though, always thought it was just the plastic cooling down or something

Got bored this afternoon and called up Sony on the popping noise. I was on hold around 30 minutes while the guy kept talking to different departments. At first they thought it was because I had the PS3 hooked to a receiver, but then were clueless when I told them it was hooked straight to the TV and it was the plastic case that was popping.

Basically they have never heard of it before, but couldn't tell me if it was normal or not. He said if it didn't effect game play, and I had a store warranty to exchange it if I wanted.

I finally found a video on YouTube with the Slim noise I've been experiencing since I got my system about a month ago.

WTF! My fat 60gb doesn't do that. Maybe from the cheaper plastic?

That's what I'm thinking. Every PS3 forum I've pulled up has at least 1 "PS3 Slim crack/pop noise" thread. I assume its a "normal" Slim problem. Other than that the system has been great.

Wow... that's crazy. I've got a slim and have never heard any noise even remotely similar to that.

On a side note, my Falcon 360 went RRoD on me this weekend

I'm wondering how common it is. I've thought about swapping the system out, but I don't want to get one thats worse or has another problem.

Not sure if the store (Gamestop) would even exchange a system that just makes a popping noise.

I've had a slim from launch and have not had any problems, and I've put in some pretty long gaming sessions so far, up to around 15 hours at a time.

Hopefully its nothing bad.

An update for those that still have problems with the Slim popping and cracking on start up and shut down. It is the plastic case, and there is a possible fix.

Unplug your PS3 Slim, and turn it over. There should be 4 rubber feet and 3 plastic caps on the bottom of the PS3 Slim. Remove all of these except for the rubber foot near the hard drive (it doesn't come off and there isn't anything under it). When you take those off you should see 6 screws. Slightly loosen each screw (1/4 of a turn), and put the feet/caps back on the PS3. Hook up the PS3 Slim and enjoy.

I tried this tonight and the popping sound at start up is now gone. The shutdown pop is very quiet and you can only hear it if you listen for it. No pops while the system is heating up either. I was pretty shocked that this simple fix made my PS3 Slim near silent compared to before. I did have to do one thing and that was take the back screw near the power connector and re-tighten it. The connector is held in place by the top and bottom half of the case and became loose when I loosened the screw. I guess Sony over tightened some of the screws on some PS3s causing it to pop when heated up, etc... Its weird, but so far seems to have fixed my only complaint with the Slim. A warning though, this might void your Sony warranty. Not sure if they can tell if you have moved the screws or not (probably not).

Yeah I don't think they can tell at all. I've been using the Slim for gaming and movies a lot since doing this last night, and so far no loud pops at all.

I'm wondering if this will fix all the Slims that pop, or if its a YMMV type fix.
