Odd problem with Onkyo receiver

I have an Onkyo receiver, I don't know the model number off hand, but its a mid-tier receiver (retailed for about 600-700 when I got it about 4 years ago). Lately, its been going into "protect" mode when I watch movies - at times where the volume spikes. It doesn't do this during TV, movies played through the cable box, or music played at any volume...just during movies played through the PS3, when the volume hits an extreme, even if I don't have it turned up high.

Is my amp fried and in need of repair, or could there be something else?

Have you tried the PS3 on a different input just to make sure it's not something wrong with that particular inputs on the receiver?

Most likely some speaker wire touching. Check all speaker wires and check for stray strands that might be grounding to the receiver chassis. A damaged speaker may also cause this so maybe try with only one speaker connected at a time.

Hmm actually no, I can try switching the optical inputs w/ the TV and see what happens, thanks.

spidey07, that's what I assumed causes the protect mode to activate - but it only does it during those select times, all of the speakers do work individually if you put the receiver through its 'test' mode.

Yes, I believe so.

I Asked because movies will have more low frequency content than music or TV. This can have higher current draw and cause your receiver to go into protect mode easier. Check for shorts in the speaker wire(I doubt that's the problem). Make sure you have adequte ventilation and if you model has one...that the fan is working.
