I just picked up a wireless Linksys WRT54G router today. I don't have any wireless equipment yet, but I needed a router and spent a few extra bucks incase I wanted to go wireless in the future. Anyways, I hooked it up, no problems with the first computer, but my second computer will not get a link light. It keeps saying there is a network cable unplugged. I checked the connections and they are fine, I even plugged the second computer back into my old hub and it gets a link. Right now i'm just uplinking to the hub then going to the second computer from the hub so it's obvious that the NIC and cable are good.

The NIC is a Dlink 530TX. Does anyone have any idea why it won't light up on my Linksys router?

btw. the router has the latest firmware available

Maybe that port is bad? Did you try the other computer in it? Also, what did you set the port speed to on the network card?

I have tested all the ports with the working computer, they all worked fine. NIC is set at 100mbps

Reset the router to defaults by depressing the little reset switch on the back, then take the cable from the working pc and try it on the other computer and see what happens.

Unforuntately this isn't the the easiest thing for me to do. My second computer is down stairs, the cat5 is 50 feet, my other cable is shorter. Speaking of which, do you think the cable length may be causing problems here? It's a pretty good quality cable, factory made which has always worked without a problem via the hub.

Someone asked about the NIC speed, do you think adjusting this may change things?

I swapped my D-Link 530TX for a cheap cicero 10/100 nic and it's now working fine

Slightly off topic, but be sure to either disable the wireless side of the router (if possible) while you are not using wireless. Or, set a WEP key on it so that ppl can't just log onto your network and/or your internet connection.

The 530TX was probablyt trying to auto negotiate it's connection, if you had forced it to 100 Full Duplex it probably woulda been fine.

Interesting, I believe it was on auto detection. I still have it in the other PCI slot, I might give it a try
