Odd problem with motherboard, can anyone help?

Ok, here is the situation. I was going to my friends computer to get some files he was storing for me off by using my external USB hard drive. I didnt see any USB ports on the front, so I tilted the case back to look for one. About half a second after I tilted it back, the power went off.

I figure, ok, the cord must have gotten caught somewhere. I find a USB plug and turn it back on. It loads up normally, but when windows comes up, I cant move his USB mouse. Or use the keyboard. I checked the mouse in different USB slots, and re-seated the keyboard plug, but nothing worked. On the keyboard all three caps num and scroll lights up.

So I hooked up an extra PS/2 mouse I had and it worked fine. Then I turned my firewire drive on it the USB thing detected it and I got all my files and took it off. I restarted to see if the mouse and keyboard would work but they didnt.

I tried his mouse and keyboard on my computer and they both worked. I tried my USB mouse on his motherboard and they didnt work.

So I know all the things work. I just dont understand why the motherboard isnt detecting it. If the PS/2 mouse works, why doesnt the keyboard? If my USB firewire HD works, why doesnt the mouse? Why does it work on my computer. Why would this happen from just pulling the case back?

I dont know exactly which motherboard he has (I dont want to ask until I have to, hes pretty angry 🙂 ) but if its necessary I will find out.

Does anyone have any ideas? He's freaking out because his computer doesnt work.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Ok, this might be a dumb question, but is it possible that you plugged his PS/2 keyboard into the PS/2 port that's reserved for the mouse (the one further from the surface of the mobo's circuit board)?

No I didnt change anything the first time it loaded up. So it should have work when it came back up.

The light didnt come on the USB mouse either.

Another suggestion that probably isn't the real answer: did you give Windows quite a fair bit of time to "discover" the USB mouse and keyboard? Start it, let it get to the log-in screen and finish churning the hard drive, then plug the USB mouse and keyboard into it and wait. If you see hard-drive activity, then Windows is rummaging through its stash of drivers to see which one it likes best. Keep waiting, and try the keyboard once in a while over the next couple minutes (if the mouse pointer appears then you're making headway there too).

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Darn. And for sure the keyboard is plugged into the PS/2 port closest to the surface of the mobo? Hmm....

I was thinking more about the power kicking out on you. Maybe the BIOS went and reset itself as a result, and disabled USB support for the mouse or something, as a default setting. Can you rummage through the BIOS menus and look for any place where the USB support has been disabled? Good luck, I'm sure you're under the gun to get this resolved :Q
