Odd problem with Comcast cable connection.

I have a Belkin wireless router that I used with Comcast for months without problems. My main desktop system was connected to the router thru wired ethernet and the laptop connected thru a wireless card.

I recently moved and the Comcast technician came over a couple days ago to hook up the cable. I wasn't able to be there at the same time, but I told him which cable outlet I was planning on using for the connection.

I haven't had a chance to setup my desktop system, so I setup the cable modem and wireless router last night so I could connect thru the laptop. Everything appeared to be working....the cable modem showed a connection and the router reported a good connection with a valid IP address.

However, when I started up Firefox or IE, the status bar says "Connecting to site 1.1.1.1". I've tried everything I know to do...cloning MAC address, reset router and modem, renew IP addresses, etc.

I feel like it's something on Comcast's end, since connecting the cable modem directly to the laptop (bypass the router) results in the same message.

I'll eventually call Comcast, but they probably won't have a clue what I am talking about. :)

Any ideas as to the problem?

If you're having a service problem, contacting the service provider is the first thing you should do. Yes, they should have a clue. It's their business.

The IP address is assigned be the DHCP, I'm not sure what you mean by cloning the MAC. Do you have block sync? Do you get any website when you open the browsers, or does it fail? Are you using the same modem, or did you get a new one? A new modem needs to be registered before it will connect outside of the cable company. Comcast's will go only to the Comcast registration site. This should have been done at installation.

I didn't switch service providers....I just moved from an apartment to a house in the same town and am using the same modem.

Since the hardware didn't change and I'm still using the same ISP in the same city, I thought it would ework fine once Comcast transferred the account.

That's how it is supposed to work, but it sounds like the technician did not complete the installation correctly. Either that or their system is looking for the MAC address from your desktop PC and won't let you get online until it sees that address..

Either way, I would call Comcast and tell them it isn't working.

If it's mapping the mac address, usually unplugging the cable modem for 60 seconds and plugging it back in will clear the old mapping. But I would agree that a call to Comcast would be in order.

Power cycle the hardware. It sounds like the modem is not fully provisioned to the new address. You can ping a comcast connection and still not be able to get a website. Call Comcast and get the modem registered.
