Odd problem when shutting down...need help...

Let's see... i just installed a new power supply in my case and am having the strangest error... my computer starts up fine, runs fine, but when I try to shutdown or restart (only these two options... hibernate and standby work fine) the system saves settings, then proceeds to shut down, turns off my keyboard, usb devices, and I can hear the hard drives spin down... but the fans keep going... the power led on my case stays on... and the monitor displays the windows background with a mouse cursor on it (what's left after shutdown process)... i have to litteraly push the power button to turn the system off completely or hit my reset button to restart (didn't have to do this before, ACPI compliant driver/HAL whatever shut my system down automatically)... i figure it's a problem with the new power supply... i'm currently running windws 2k pro (downgraded from xp for some troubleshooting, but will soon reinstall win xp pro)... just wondering if you guys have any idea what's causing this... i'm hoping to find out before i reinstall everyting... any clue or comment is much appreciated... oh.. i also just installed an APC UPS backup battery/surgeprotector... it conects to the USB for monitoring... might be contributing to or causing the problem... i thank you all ahead of time for your input...🙂

Try it without the UPS. If that doesn't help, try going into bios and disabling ACPI (no standby/sleep). Or try removing ACPI from the device manager and restarting so windows can install it again. Just a few thoughts - good luck..........

yeah... i tried all that you said... but no go... so i went ahead and wiped out the HD and installed win xp pro... the problem went away... so far... i'm not done installing all drivers and proggies... but so far it's working just fine... thanx for the input Buk... much appreciated...
